In the Winter of 1993, Ruby Price joined the waitstaff team of Ben's Kosher Delicatessen in Greenvale to fill in her "off season" from the country club she worked at. Not wanting to take a season off is not surprising as hard work is at the core of Ruby's character. She immediately became a strong member of the team and made Ben's her full time, year round job in January 1997.
Always the 1st one in and the last one to leave, Ruby worked tirelessly to set the standard of cleanliness, preparation and presentation. She trained and mentored many servers and bussers over the years, building up the dining room staff throughout the company. By the time of the big renovation in 2000, Ruby had risen to head server. The old party room quickly became known as the Ruby Room, filled with her loyal following of guests.
The part that appears effortless was how Ruby makes Ben's customers feel welcomed and cared for. Over almost 3 decades, she connected with so many customers with her affinity for remembering names and personal details. Ruby's special talent with children enabled her to convince the most picky 4 year old that a matzoh ball is delicious. They would believe her, devour it and ask for more! Those kids have since grown up to bring their kids in to sit with Ruby to eat a good wholesome meal; brisket, a pickle, and definitely a matzoh ball soup!
During the pandemic, Ruby spent the past few months in North Carolina with her husband Elmer and family. When the Greenvale dining room reopened, she had to make a tough decision whether to return to Mineola and her career at Ben's, or to seize this opportunity to slow down and enjoy her family and fair weather.
The entire Ben's family was sad to learn of Ruby's retirement, but we are grateful that she will return for a final 4 weeks. Starting Tuesday, August 4th, we invite all our customers to come in and enjoy a meal served by Ruby, say goodbye and join us in wishing her all the very best!!
